Keeping patients cold is saving lives.
Current data suggests that a heart attack patient induced into a hypothermic state may have reduced morbidity and mortality.
Tissues slow down their metabolism and blood flow in the cold. This slowing decreases
the likelihood that heart tissue will suffer subacutely from further lack of
oxygen and reperfusion damage, following a heart attack. Tony Voiers of Novocor
Medical Systems has taken this information to heart, and created mobile hypothermic induction units (HypoCores) to be used by emergency medical technicians
on cardiac patients.
